Own a Thatched Roof? Why Understanding It Saves You Money and Worry

Repairing a thatched Roof under a rainbow
A practical guide for owners of thatched homes in Ireland: the signs to watch for, when a ridge usually needs attention, and how a hands-on repair day can help.

Owning a thatched home is a pleasure, and a responsibility. Most owners aren’t thatchers, and they don’t need to be. But the owners whose roofs last best tend to have one thing in common. They understand how their roof works well enough to notice when something changes.

If you haven’t already, read our earlier piece on maintaining your thatch roof. Here are a few more pointers, and a hands-on way to learn more.

Know your roof’s rhythm

On a water reed roof, the ridge takes the most weather and usually needs attention first. As a rule of thumb, most thatched roofs need a new ridge and a tidy-up every 10 to 12 years or so. The main coat lasts much longer if the ridge and any problem areas are kept on top of. Exposure, pitch, shade, and the quality of the original work all affect the timing.

Signs worth a closer look

  • A ridge that looks thin, open or patchy, or where the fixings are showing
  • Hollows, dips or loose areas in the coat, especially around chimneys, valleys and windows
  • Moss build-up in shaded areas, or a coat that stays damp long after rain
  • Bird or rodent damage, or reed pulled out at the eaves
  • Loose eaves or hip ends that look less tight than they used to

None of these mean disaster on their own. They do mean it’s worth asking a thatcher to have a look sooner rather than later. You can find thatchers on Thatch Finder.

Learn by doing: repair and ridge days

If you’d like to understand your roof properly, there’s no better way than to handle the materials yourself. At Boglands in Daingean, Co. Offaly, Mike Davies of Thatching Ireland runs a Thatch Repair Workshop and a Ridge Repair Workshop, both aimed at owners. They’re part of a wider programme of water reed workshops starting in April 2027.

You’ll see how reed is laid, dressed and fixed, how a ridge is built, and what a thatcher is looking for on a repair. You won’t be rethatching your own house afterwards, but you’ll understand quotes better, ask better questions, and catch small problems before they become big ones. Lunch, gloves and PPE are included. See dates and book.

Want a head start? The free Water Reed Thatching taster course on Boglands Academy covers the basics, including maintenance and repair, in an evening.

A gift for the cottage owner

If someone in your family has a thatched home, a Roof Thatching Workshop gift voucher is a thoughtful and genuinely useful present. Every Boglands gift voucher comes in €50, €100, €225, €250 or €500, is emailed within 24 hours of purchase and is valid for five years. It can be used across more than one booking, and any balance of €1 or more is reissued as a new voucher with the same expiry. Add the recipient’s name and a message in the order notes at checkout and they go on the voucher.
