They are called Biddles. They are for standing on while working. They have long hooks on them that poke into the roof and are held by the sway that holds the courses of reed/straw down. They are very handy to get to awkward places, where it is difficult to get a ladder to. If you have plenty of them it speeds work up a lot. You can view a few versions of them on this website:

The three in this image are made from aluminium. The wood is oak. There is an aluminium back on these to keep small things secure. Helps to keep your boots digging in to older roofs as well.
